The Science

SPACE® Method

The SPACE® Method is an advanced internal methodology layered on top of internationally accredited Pilates certification. A teaching framework designed to maximise the science and experience of our classes for your results.

Consistent delivery of the science behind Pilates means reputable and thorough Pilates certification as a minimum standard. This is why our team hold full Pilates certification from independent, leading Pilates educators. No exceptions, no compromises.

Pilates

Pilates trains the nervous system through motor control + neuroplasticity, precise muscle sequencing, coordination + inhibition of overactive muscles.

Sequenced eccentric, concentric, isometric and quasi-isometric movements encourage full-spectrum mechanical tension, sarcomere and fiber-level resilience, neural integration and motor control, tendon and connective tissue adaptation, and energy system and fatigue resistance.

‘Feedforward activation’ (anticipatory muscle activation) is the result of focus on deep stabiliser muscles, such as the transverse abdominis, pelvic floor, multifidus. When stabiliser muscles are fired correctly, the associated intra-abdominal pressure stabilises the spine, reduces force on joints and improves force transfer.

Many Pilates movements are deliberately slow to increase time under tension which requires continuous stabiliser activation and reduces momentum (cheating!). Pilates is neurologically demanding and why the level of control needed also requires full mental focus.

Strength training

Loss of muscle mass and metabolic strength starts in our 30s and is known as sarcopenia. It’s the result of a combination of hormonal changes, reduced muscle protein synthesis and lower levels of daily activity. Without regular resistance training, it’s estimated that adults can lose 3-8% of muscle mass per decade, accelerating after age 50.

Hypertrophy training increases the size of muscle fibres by stimulating muscle protein synthesis. Targeted at type II muscle fibres to trigger cellular signalling pathways, that promote growth and repair of muscle tissue, resulting in stronger muscles over time and protecting against sarcopenia. It can protect bone density, joint stability and improve insulin sensitivity.

Endurance training improves the muscle’s ability to sustain repeated contractions over longer periods. Lighter loads with higher repetitions, encouraging adaptions such as increased mitochondrial density, capillarisation and improved metabolic efficiency. These adaptations enhance the muscle’s resistance to fatigue and its ability to generate force repeatedly without significant loss of performance. Endurance training also increases aerobic capacity and improves circulation to support daily activities and support cardiovascular health.

INFRAsauna

Our saunas are full spectrum, emitting NIR, MIR and FIR.

Together, the bands promote mitochondrial and cellular signalling, leading to vasodilation, which increases blood flow to skin and muscles, improving circulation, range of motion, relaxation and recovery.

Heat shock proteins (HSPs) increase, repairing damaged proteins and cells.

Parasympathetic rebound activates after the session, releasing endorphins, supporting detox capacity and reducing cortisol over time.

Heat reduces muscles stiffness, increases oxygen delivery and can lead to moderate cardiovascular adaptations.
